The National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) is a public research organization and the main producer of official statistics in Italy. The institute operates autonomously and in continuous interaction with academia and science. It is a member of the PSE (European Statistical Program) and SISTAN (National Statistical System) and its mission is to serve the community through the production and communication of statistical information, analysis and forecasts in the economic, social and environmental spheres, simultaneously addressing different audiences, including businesses, the press, citizens and administrations to meet heterogeneous needs and requirements.

Solutions

AI-Istat Data is an intelligent chat solution developed by ISTAT together with Deda Next and Microsoft, based on Microsoft Azure OpenAI. The platform revolutionizes access to public statistical data by enabling consultation of over 2 billion records through natural language interactions, making access to data published on the IstatData platform simpler, faster and more inclusive. The project involved the development of a Generative Virtual Assistant directly integrated into the institution’s website to support users in navigating information and accessing the platform’s many functionalities. The assistant enables users to search statistical datasets through natural language requests and dynamically modify filters and visualization modes according to the SDMX data standard adopted by the institute.

Results

Semantic Enrichment: Through the use of LLMs, descriptive metadata was generated to provide a complete and multidimensional understanding of datasets. This enabled the creation of a semantic representation suitable for integration into a vector database.

Virtual Assistant: The chatbot orchestration is managed through direct integration with the ISTAT website, including workflows for request routing and autonomous handling of more complex tasks such as graphical data visualization.

Benefits: The solution simplified access to datasets and improved data navigation both in terms of response quality and website usability, while also strengthening ISTAT’s SEO positioning.
