The Italian Encyclopedia Institute Treccani, founded in 1925 as a national-interest private institution, represents a cornerstone of Italian culture with an extensive encyclopedic heritage including thematic and encyclopedic works. Every day, Treccani faces complex operational challenges involving manual research across distributed external sources such as state archives and academic publications, integrated with proprietary internal archives spread across heterogeneous systems. Historians, linguists and editors spend hours carrying out manual tasks such as querying fragmented digital archives, verifying facts and sources from external institutions, lexical analysis and content indexing. These activities reduce the time available for critical analysis, editorial production and content updates, ultimately impacting productivity.

Solutions

Istella addressed Treccani’s needs through Jana, the Knowledge Infrastructure layer of the Istella AI Platform, specifically designed to solve fragmented research across proprietary internal sources and distributed external archives. Jana indexes billions of web and multimedia documents, creating a centralized knowledge base. Through NLP and machine learning techniques, documents are semantically categorized to generate a knowledge graph connecting related information. Thanks to its conversational interface, Jana allows teams to query the knowledge base using natural language and obtain contextualized and verifiable answers.

Results

The results for Treccani were transformative: Jana eliminated research fragmentation, freeing teams to focus on high-value creative and editorial activities. Complex searches across state archives, academic databases and proprietary documents can now be completed in minutes rather than hours, thanks to knowledge graphs automatically connecting entities such as historical events and internal bibliographies for immediate and integrated access. Response quality proved highly effective, with semantic accuracy minimizing verification errors. Editors can now access contextualized information from both internal and external sources, reducing manual work and focusing on critical interpretation, original analysis and rapid updates of the encyclopedic heritage.
